Unrestricted:
These funds are typically created by
visionary philanthropists with broad
charitable interests. They offer current
and future trustees of the Foundation
maximum flexibility to support the creation
of innovative responses to community needs,
as well as to respond to emergencies and
community priorities as they change over
time.
Field of
Interest:
This fund allows the donor to support a
broadly defined charitable cause, such as
education, the arts, health, youth or the
disabled. The Community Foundation then
seeks out worthy projects within this
defined field of interest. Some donors who
create field of interest funds enjoy
participating in the process of identifying
worthy projects.
Designated:
These funds are normally created to
perpetually benefit one or more specific
charities. Grants will be made in the name
of the fund as long as the grantee
organization remains in operation and is
consistent with its original charitable
purpose.
Donor
Advised:
These funds
are often an attractive alternative to the
creation of a private foundation. Donors
receive a 100% tax deduction for the
original, and any additional gifts. In
subsequent years, they may suggest deserving
charities to benefit from fund income, or if
desired, fund principal Grants are then
made, in the name of the fund, to favored
charities.
Geographic /
Field of Interest:
Donors whose
charitable interests are limited to a
particular geographic area within Colusa
County can establish geographic funds for
the benefit of their particular community or
city.
Endowments:
An endowment is a fund that generates
revenue through interest, dividends and
appreciation – the principal is not
touched. In this way, donors are able to
leave a legacy that will live on in
perpetuity.
Agency
Endowments:
This type of
fund is established when a non-profit
organization agrees to transfer all or part
of its endowment to a designated fund within
the Foundation. Individual donors can also
establish agency endowments. This type of
fund is not appropriate for an
organization’s operating reserves. It is
for true endowments.
Charitable
Remainder Trusts:
The
Foundation can administer charitable trusts,
including charitable remainder trusts and
charitable lead trusts. These planned
giving alternatives often create “win-win”
situations.
Agency
Endowment Funds:
An agency
endowment fund is a type of designated fund
established at a community foundation by a
charity for the charity’s own benefit.
